Funding initiatives to help youth anonymously fight crime and improve quality of life in their schools and communities

OTTAWA, ON, January 28, 2013National Capital Area Crime Stoppers (NCACS) is taking its message to high school students in the Ottawa area to show them how they can report criminal activities anonymously and help make their communities safer places to live and play. For tips that result in an arrest, Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,000 in cash rewards.

With three years of funding totaling $50,000 from Economical Insurance, NCACS is rolling out a number of initiatives to give youth the confidence to report what they know about criminal activities without fear of retaliation.

All too often, youth are hesitant to report crime. We are going to meet and talk with high school youth and show them how they can call, text or email a tip with guaranteed anonymity and maybe earn a cash reward in the process,” said Wayne Bissett, president of National Capital Area Crime Stoppers. “We want them to know that when information is provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers, criminals are apprehended, stolen property is recovered, drugs are seized and illegal firearms are taken off the streets.”

To accomplish this, NCACS will be:

1)  Engaging directly with Ottawa Police School Resource Officers who work with almost 60 high schools in our community and have direct contact with school officials and students. They will help promote Crime Stoppers in the schools.

2)  Creating opportunities for its youth committee to work with the newly developed Ottawa Police Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) of 20 individuals ranging in age from 14 to 24 who are willing to collaborate on events and programs such as Crime Stoppers. Members of the YAC will be encouraged to deliver presentations to their peer groups on issues such as bullying, personal safety and how to use the Crime Stoppers program.

3) Collaborating with the YAC to produce a video which will focus on important issues youth face and how the Crime Stoppers program can help them report crime anonymously. This video will be made widely available through schools, the Youth Services Bureau, Ottawa Boys and Girls Club and other organizations that deal with youth.

4) Actively promoting the Crime Stoppers program at community events that target youth.

“We share with Crime Stoppers the belief that informed citizens can make a difference in helping to make communities safer,” said Karen Gavan, Economical’s president and CEO. “We are proud to support these initiatives that will help youth fight crime and develop a life-long sense of responsible citizenship.”

About National Capital Area Crime Stoppers
Crime Stoppers is a locally run program serving Canada’s National Capital Area, including municipalities in both Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. We were formed in 1985 by a group of local business people who heard about this community run program being successful elsewhere.  It helps law enforcement solve crimes and provides cash rewards to those who have confidential and anonymous information that will help the police solve crimes. Our civilian program works closely with law enforcement, accepting tips at our 613-233-TIPS (8477) phone number. Anyone in Canada can call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and be connected to their closest locally-operated Crime Stoppers program.
