(Ottawa)— The National Capital Area Crime Stoppers is pleased to announce that between February 1, 2018 and April 30, 2018, tips leading to the seizure of crime guns will receive the maximum cash reward of $2,000.
Crime Stoppers Ottawa is proud to work in close partnership with the Ottawa Police Service.
“We have seen an increase in the reckless use of illegal firearms in public areas close to where children play in the daytime,” stated Richard McMullen, President of the National Capital Area Crime Stoppers. “Crime Stoppers provides a safe and anonymous way for people to provide information to assist police in removing these guns from our community.”
In 2018, there have been 12 incidents of shots being fired to date, six of which resulted in injuries, two of them fatal.
“The dangers posed by illegal firearms put everyone at risk, from intended targets to police and anyone in the immediate area.” said Insp. Mark Patterson, Criminal Investigations Directorate. “For everyone’s safety, we need to get these firearms off the street. The increase in Crime Stoppers reward money for tips about crime guns is another tool law enforcement can use to do just that.”
This is not a gun amnesty. Crime Stoppers and police are looking for information on ILLEGAL firearms. Do not bring these firearms to police stations.
We ask the public to first contact the Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222 should they wish to turn over a firearm; please do not bring any firearm or ammunition into police stations.
