The Hawkesbury detachment of the O.P.P has now become actively involved in the Crime Stoppers program. We are promoting the program in the Hawkesbury area that includes the communities of Hawkesbury, Champlain, East-Hawkesbury, Nation and Alfred-Plantagenet townships.

Crime Stoppers is a cooperative program between the community, media and police. The program encourages the public to report information anonymously on criminal activities. This information is then passed on to the police investigating the crimes. If there are any charges or arrests then a financial reward can be offered to the tipster. Everyone benefits, except the criminal!

Contact Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers does NOT subscribe to call display and you will never be asked to reveal your name. Crime Stoppers provides tipsters with a confidential code number that is used for all future communications.

To submit a tip on-line follow the "submit a tip" section on our home page.

Crime Stoppers is administered by a community volunteer board of directors and is a registered charity supported through donations of money, goods, and/or services. Crime Stoppers does not receive any government funding, therefore the program relies solely on community support. Donations are used to cover the cost of paying tipsters, administration and the on-going promotion of the program.

About Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is a locally run program serving Canada's National Capital and Area including municipalities in both Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. We were formed in 1985 by a group of local business people who had heard about this community run program being successful elsewhere in helping the police solve crimes through cash rewards given to those who have confidential and anonymous information that will help the police solve crimes.

The program also raises money to fund the cash rewards and arranges payouts to those whose tips are successful.

Our civilian program works closely with police, accepting tips at our 613-233-TIPS (8477) phone number. Anyone in Canada can call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and be connected to their closest locally operated Crime Stoppers program.

Crime Stoppers and the Ottawa Police Service are seeking your assistance in identifying the suspect involved in an assault and shooting that occurred in the Hintonburg area.

On August 25, 2006 at about 2:00am Neighborhood Officers of the Ottawa Police Service were involved in an undercover operation designed to reduce prostitution in the Wellington Street, McCormick Street area. A lone female officer, dressed in civilian attire, acted as a decoy and other police officers were positioned nearby to act as back up and arrest any obvious clients.

A black male was observed walking towards the undercover female officer and then attempting to solicit her services. The officer declined his advances, stating that she was waiting for another “John” who was in the area. The suspect left but a few minutes later he returned and proceeded to run towards the officer from behind. He stopped near the officer, pulled out a firearm and then grabbed her and struggled with her. During the struggle he continued to shout obscenities but as soon as he saw the back-up officers coming toward him he decided to make a run for it.

The suspect fled the area and ran to the Royal Bank parking lot near the scene. He began to climb over a chain-linked fence when he was grabbed around the ankle by one of the pursuing officers. Other officers warned the pursuer of the gun and as the suspect fell to the ground on the other side of the fence he reached out to retrieve his weapon. At that moment a second officer fired a shot at the suspect who immediately got to his feet and fled the area. A search of the neighborhood could not locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’7” in height and with a very slim build. He was clean shaven, 18 to 22 years old and was wearing blue jeans and a white oversize golf shirt with blue stripes across the chest.
